There are dizzy daffodils on the hillside
Strings of violets are all in tune
Tiger lilies love the dandelions

Alice and Wonderland

Do you ever have garden dreams?  Visions of what your garden will look like in the month of June, the height of summer growing.  I have a few "garden dreams" that my garden is based upon. One including the scene from Alice and Wonderland where she finds herself in a flower garden. The flowers sing a song to introduce themselves called "All in the Golden Afternoon".

Our hard work in April shows off in June

Weeding, planting and digging... lots and lots of digging in April.  I am a bit happy that our gym is closed right now, because there is no way I would be working out after a long day of digging in the garden!  All of this labor will be worth it come June.  BEWARE The thing about gardening is it can go from a chore to an obsession.  You begin by digging an area to plant a few cucumbers. All of a sudden you are digging up half of the yard to fill it with butternut squash and calendula.  It is a slippery slope...

For the past month we have been planting seeds in the vegetable boxes of peas, beans, radishes and carrots.  Baby lettuces have been planted in three boxes, one week a part to make sure we can keep up with eating the product.  Companion planting is our new thing this year as well- we have been trying to utilize the space that we have with planting vegetables, fruits and herbs near each other to stimulate growth and pest prevention.

The plants that we started indoors from seed for an early crop are now either being transferred to larger pots indoors or beginning the hardening process.  Once hardened they are then planted outdoors.  Ahhh, I am so excited and scared.  Like a proud momma, I can't wait to have my babies go out into the world and live.  So afraid of them not surviving!  My husband has caught me talking to them several times and the amazing partner that he is, Jeff talks to them too to promote plant health and survival.

Here is our list of vegetables and herbs growing together in the garden:

Potatoes (3 different types) and Nasturtium in the back plot

Tomatoes (3 different types including Roma and cherry) and Basil in the back plot

Kids love Planting and Eating!

My son Micah likes planting flowers, fruits and vegetables.  He loves being outside and it has been a great tool for learning where food comes from.  Now that we are homeschooling we took a week to learn about seeds and the life cycle of a plant.  I found a great book and coloring sheets to download from pinterest.  Both Micah and Noah enjoyed learning the parts of a seed and watching their seeds grow.

I also find that it is beneficial for children to work in a garden, because it helps them understand how food is produced.  It shows them that it takes hard work and time to receive food, thus they respect it and no longer want to waste it.  Micah and Noah also look forward to what they grow and although they may not like it, they will always try and taste it.  We are always cooking together and they are constantly learning how to take care of food product and a balanced meal.

We now are finding worms and bugs in the garden from all of the digging.  This has created a new lesson plan on the importance of good bugs and pests.  Micah loves worms and treats them well by making sure they are in the soil doing their job of composting.  He looks forward to purchasing some lady bugs soon and we will let you know how it goes in our next post.
